DESCRIPTION
Concept design and cost estimation for the redevelopment of an existing solid waste and recycling transfer station in Nelson, BC. The existing site is situated on downtown waterfront lands previously occupied by an industrial rail yard and landfill, with a significant leachate plume. The project also included a feasibility assessment and concept application for an alternate site on the outskirts of the city.

SERVICES RENDERED
My concept included a value-added stack of innovative ecological and social design features, which were enthusiastically received by the client’s Solid Waste Committee. Based on confidence in my quantity and cost estimations, the municipality elected to directly construct some of the essential modifications while developing a long term plan to work with the City of Nelson to implement the remainder.

  • Community waste resource reuse-recycling-compost-transfer station design optimized for social economic and environmental benefits.
  • Comprehensive review of cadastral mapping, bylaw, and eco designs for waste resource facilities.
  • Construction cost estimation and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Foreshore bio-remediation wetland for site storm water runoff and historical leachate plume.
  • Interpretative walking trail explaining sustainable site and community waste resource use, expanding adjacent public greenspace parkland.
  • Vehicular access design – highway and bridge upgrades per TAC design standards.
  • Presentation for council and reporting for public review proceedings.
