Our colleagues at FATHOM STUDIO were commissioned to transform part of historical downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, into a $6M sidewalk-free, mixed automobile and pedestrian shared streetscape, the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada.
Many unique features represent some radical departures from existing Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) streets and design standards, so helping various municipal departments understand and prepare to manage the site became a critical issue as the project neared completion.
Fathom Studio, as the project’s primary consultant, brought on Snow Owl to create a technical manual for the project’s non-standard design, public safety, operations, maintenance, and other aspects not conveyed by the construction drawings alone.
We researched case studies, design standards, life cycle costs, repair procedures, manufacturer’s specifications, and worked with all of the project’s sub-consulting design and engineering firms and HRM staff to produce a comprehensive and useful reference document, which has been adopted by Halifax as the shared streetscape owner’s manual.
